READ THIS IF YOU ARE JUDGING

1. Be there by 12:30 at the LATEST. That is when judges instructions are, which you need to be around for. I don't care if you are God's gift to debate, be at the instructions.

2. Act mature. I cannot stress this enough. You will be representing Lynbrook HS and all of our coaches. This means no mouthing off or being smart-asses during instructions, no disclosing or making comments to the students that they might not take well, etc. Seriously, I do not want to hear it. If there is a complaint about you, and it's substantiated, you will not be competing for Lynbrook this year.

3. If you are coming, you need to stay the entire time. This means staying THROUGH awards. If that is a problem, tell me so I can replace you

4. If you do not show up, I will charge your account a drop fee of $20 like I would anyone else that dropped.

Because of what happened with SCU, and considering schools are entering earlier and earlier, we are going to do MLK a little different. We are going to do sign-ups in waves. It does us no good if we wait to make sure the most dedicated qualified kids are entered if we have no slots. So on each Sunday, I am going to enter in teams. Not until we hit the entry limits will I bother to make decisions about who gets to go (example - say we get 5 slots in LD. 4 kids enter in LD by this friday, I will enter all of them. Next week, 3 kids enter. Because we have one spot left, I will talk with the captains to determine who gets the slot. The 4 that signed up first, regardless of skill/dedication, will be entered and not removed.

I REALIZE THIS IS SOMEWHAT UNFAIR, BUT I'M TIRED OF EVERYONE ENTERING AT THE LAST SECOND AND MAKING IT SO WE'RE UNABLE TO GET SLOTS AT TOURNAMENTS.

That being said, the first wave of entries will be done on Monday, December 8th. To combat people signing up just to sign up, a drop fee of $50 will be charged to your account if you sign-up and then cannot attend, no matter how quickly.

DEBATE RESOLUTIONS

Team Debate:
Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase alternative energy incentives in the United States.

Lincoln-Douglas Debate:
We will use the January-February National Forensic League topic for Lincoln-Douglas Debate.

Public Forum Debate:
We will use the January National Forensic League topic for Public Forum Debate.

DOUBLE & TRIPLE ENTRIES

Any number of students from each school can double enter in the events pattern. Please be aware that all events run at the same time and any round missed due to double entry cannot be made up. Moreover, four varsity competitors from each school can triple-enter. Tri-athletes must have one event in the debate pattern. Tri-athletes will not count toward the entry limit for individual events.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

Please remind students to stay on campus during the competition. We will sell a variety of foods at reasonable prices. We also ask that students respect the campus and classrooms. Rooms will be monitored and any student found tampering with any items will be disqualified. The judge should be the first to enter and the last to exit the classroom. Judges will be asked to turn in the names of students violating this rule. We are trying to keep tournament costs to a minimum; any damage to property will result in disqualification. Moreover, in concurrence with California law, any student caught smoking in view of the campus will be disqualified as well.

Saratoga Novice Tournament Critical Information

Hi all. Very excited that so many of you signed up for the tournament. Here is some important information that you need to know before my Wed Logistics email.

First, the varsity students are volunteering to judge so NO PARENTS will need to judge.

Second, the tournament starts at 1pm, so you will need to be @ Saratoga HS by 12:30pm. There are 3 rounds instead of four.

Third, the tournament is using the sept/oct (killing innocents) topic for LD.

Finally, remember that medical forms are due NO LATER THAN WEDNESDAY. Remember that a NEW MEDICAL FORM must be completed for EACH tournament. You can print the medical form out online via the LSD website, and drop it off in the box in room 108.

VBT Tournament in Los Angeles, January 3/4 info thread

Because invitationals are filling up faster and faster, we need to start doing everything far in advance. Even though the tournament isn't for six weeks, I'm putting the tournament available via sign-ups up tomorrow. I'm going to paste some of the important information from the JOT invitation so nobody is confused.

The tournament is during break, and we will more than likely fly because I do not want (nor feel comfortable) taking huge vans for 6 hour drives. This might change depending on # of entries. My guess is (assuming 3 Asst. Coaches) we'll take 20-30 people. Not sure on this.

Incredibly high judging costs
If you need to hire judges, you MUST let the tournament know by DECEMBER 15! Failure to bring sufficient judges will result in your entries being dropped from the tournament without refund. The rate to hire judges is 150.00 per uncovered entry. This means, if you bring 3 LD entries but ZERO judges, you will be charged 450.00 in judges fees.

This is important and needs to be understood. While we need one judge per 3 debaters in LD, for example, hired judges cost $150 PER DEBATER FOR THE COMMITMENT. This can be INCREDIBLY EXPENSIVE so I reserve the right to either limit entries, or will check with you to make sure you're okay with being charged that amount of money.

NFL Points are great - they make us look fabulous as a school and that's what our administration like to see. Beyond just getting points for wins/losses at a tournament, points are given out if you have volunteered to judge in addition to public speaking, service, etc. So if you do these things, please send them to Belinda so she can enter it.

December 6th - Novice Debate #1 @ Saratoga High School
*Parli, Public Forum, LD, and Policy Debate Offered
*Saturday, one day tournament
*I'm not exactly sure what is considered a novice, but my assumption is that if you are in your first year of debate you can sign-up. Even those students that feel confident, you should still go! I know we even had some policy novices that went in varsity at league, you can still go to this. More rounds is always a good thing.
*Entry fee is $9
*Medical Forms for this are due no later than WED, DECEMBER 3RD.

December 12th-14th - Santa Clara University Tournament
*Parli, Public Forum, LD, Policy, Congress, IEs, and Original events.
*There are entry limits that are expanded on a first come, first serve basis. For that reason, on the 19th on November I will begin adding people to the tournament. Usually we don't do slots like that, but considering how they do entires, it has to be. ENTER SOON TO MAKE SURE YOU GO.
*Three day tournament starting Friday and ending Sunday. ONLY DEBATE is on friday.
*Divisions: Novice and Open Division in Debate and Events except Congress. Novice is normally defined at the first year of competition.
*Uses the 1st LD Resolution (kill one to save many)
*Uses the December POFO Resolution (Myspace or whatever)
*Entry fee's range between $10 and $35.
*Medical forms are due no later than TUESDAY, DECEMBER 9TH.

December 20th-21st - College Prep Tournament
*LD Only - Two divisions, Varsity and Novice
*Uses the Jan/Feb topic, which means you will only have a couple weeks to prep. Practice will be intensive.

*Entry limits of 4 in VLD and 2 in NLD. May increase after December 1st.

Urgent Team Issues - PLEASE READ

I wanted to get the congratulatory email done first because I really am proud of all of you. However, after this tournament there are a number of major issues that need to be resolved before any of you attend future tournaments. The first is the issue of reading emails and announcement posts. Recently it�s felt like the great majority of you do not take the time to read either of them, then feign like you were never told about specific things that were included in the emails.

Because it�s impossible for me to be at every practice in addition to many of you coming sporadically, via the Internet is the only way to disseminate critical information to everyone. There needs to be a greater effort on everyone�s part to stay up-to-date. Please let your partners/friends/teammates know of anything important also. This will minimize some of guesswork that is being done.

Now onto the specifics. The first and most important thing has been happening all year but really snowballed into an enormous problem at the Milpitas Debate Tournament. More then half of the competing students (30+) left the school without checking out with Jeff or myself. This is ABSOLUTELY unacceptable. If the administration was to learn that I had no idea where many of you were at 6pm at night they would shut down our program immediately. It�s terrifying as a coach to not know where your students are. While I realize the chances of something bad happening are small, I have a responsibility to the school, your parents, and even you to ensure that nothing even has a chance of happening. Competing is important, but trumping that is safety.

Furthermore, I wanted to make sure the 4-0�s did not leave so that they could be due rewarded but all of them left. It was totally embarrassing to hear Lynbrook being called but not have the recipients there to receive their medals. My policy in the past, letting students leave early, is lenient because of a certain amount of trust I place in everyone. At this point, that policy is going to be changed and from now on, at any tournament, students will be expected to stay until after awards. Once awards finish, students can check out assuming their parents are on-site.

If you would like to leave early, I need an email or a phone call from your parent at least one DAY before the tournament begins. That means that notification the day of that you would like to leave early is unacceptable.

This policy will be non-negotiable. Any infraction will cause the specific student to be finished competing for two months. I realize this is extreme, but putting our entire program in jeopardy is something I do not take lightly.

Next, is the issue of parent judging. I ABSOLUTELY understand that for the great majority of parents, their weekends are valuable and needing to judge is a burden. This is why I�ve gone to GREAT lengths to minimize the number of parent judges we use for tournaments. In past years, from what I�m told, almost 100% of parents were required to come to tournaments. I�ve cut that down to it being about a 20% chance a parent gets selected for a tournament. This has involved me going to community colleges and speaking with professors to get them to encourage their students to judge for us.

That being said, judges that are selected need to not only show up, but stay for the ENTIRE DAY. If this policy has been unclear I apologize, but almost every tournament now parents have decided they are just going to show up for half the day and take off. The tournaments cannot run smoothly if this happens, and I�ve been in trouble repeatedly with the league president for this. At this point we are the only school it�s happened consistently with. So please, from now on if you are selected to judge, you need to stay for the entire day. Failure to do so will result in a $50 fine levied against your child�s account.

Finally, forms. Even after repeated emails and talks at practice, a number of students either turned in their forms a day late or not until the tournament. This isn�t a LSD policy but a district policy, and allowing kids to compete without all the forms turned in is a huge liability. A new medical form must be turned in before EACH tournament. This is a departure from past years. Medical forms must be turned in at least three days before a tournament. We have a box provided in Room 108 that lets you turn them in anytime. You can turn them into me directly also. To expedite this entire process, we have hosted the medical forms online so you can print out at your convenience.

While there are no punishments for not turning in your forms, there will be no more leniencies on date. If the medical forms (or whatever other forms are required) are not turned in by the deadline, students will be dropped from the tournament and assessed the $20 drop fee.

My apologies that this turned out so long, but the team has been an absolute joy to run and these are the only issues that need resolving. As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with questions/concerns.

Considering it's tournament weekend, I have got the classrooms for us on Friday from 330-7pm. This is going to be practice focused 100% on critiqued rounds, so if you don't have cases finished or aren't prepared to debate, please do not come! Remember, this is NOT just for novices, varsity are welcome and encouraged to debate!
